Hi all,
I am looking to spend around £600 on my first road/ commuting bike. I current using a MBT and looking to get a road / commuter bike for commuting 9 miles to and from work
I am considering getting one of the following
Giant Defy 4 Compact 2012
http://www.cyclesurgery.com/pws/UniqueP ... CGIA0601WR
Specialized Allez Compact
http://www.cyclesurgery.com/pws/UniqueP ... CSBC1071KK
Specialized Secteur 2012
http://www.cyclesurgery.com/pws/UniqueP ... CSBC1119WR
Which one do you think I should get from the above?
Should I consider any other bikes?
Should I consider a hybrid bike rather than a road bike?
Thanks

Personally I would test ride all of them before committing.
As you already have a mbt I would get a road bike. My personal view is that a hybird is great as a starter or as a single bike, but as you already have the mbt get the roadie.
At the price range you are looking at, take a look at a boardman as well.0 -
predictable answer but you need to test ride these - having tested an allez, secteur, defy and tcr the difference is noticeable and one will feel better than the other depending on what you want (secteur / defy going to feel more upright).
agree with samsbike regarding getting a road bike having ridden both (ridgeback day02 / cannondale caad8) - wish I'd made the move much sooner, but again, personal view and you may feel differently having tried a few out.0 -
I would say it depends on your route / distance also. The more expensive road bikes you get the less likely they are to have mounts for mudguards and pannier racks. Having just started commuting by bike myself and I was considering the allez elite, I am so glad I got a Tricross for the guards. The last 2 days it has been wet enough to give spray but not raining so I didn't get wet at all. If your distance isn't too far then a backpack will do, but if your doing quite a way daily you will quickly get tired of the sweaty back and aching shoulders.0
