can any one help me with this one. ???
i got to take a look at the misses sons bike he just got a old 04 model rockymountain slayer. it needs some work doing on it mainly serving.
ok the problem i got is it has shimano deore hubs on it when you pedal it will not free wheel the pedals just turn on there own and if you weight the cranks then the cassette/freehub body carry on turning causing the chain to bunch up.. so you have to keep the cranks spinning to ride it.
i have looked at numerous vids and blogs on shimano freehubs and cant see any on deore hubs but xt ones the freehub is replaceable.
does anyone know if the deore one is replaceable and if so would it be compatable with the hub being so old.
is it worth trying to replace the free hub or just replace the wheel.
thanks guys.

I serviced my shimano freehub (FH-RM65)/rear wheel, last weekend, not Deore though, I think. With all the correct tools it was pretty straight forward, after doing some research on this site. Gave all the relevant parts a good clean and re-grease, some new ball-bearings, etc. Did not replace the freewheel bit, however I might be looking at a new rear wheel soon judging from the state of my cones. Small signs of pitting. Got to start saving the cash.I've got Soul.0

thanks Ally thats an interesting read,,
more info i looked at the bike tonight the hub is a FH-M525 i had a look on the net and cant find a freehub body but i can find the same hub FH-M525 and get it for a measily £16 so i guess if i got the same hub i could butcher it and transfare the freehub from the new one to the old one and maybe replace the axel cones and bearings while i'm at it...
any one????

And if you can't butcher it you can test your wheel building skills.0

Buying a new hub is often the best option.I don't do smileys.

I always advise folk to buy a complete hub, strip it down and transfer all the parts over as the freehub body for that hub is actually more expensive than a whole hub. The part number for a freehub body for an M525 is 3A3 9802 and SRP is £21.990

how do you get the freehub off when the hub isn't built up into a wheel?0 -
Jam the hub body into a vice. As you are going to bin that bit anyway it doesn't matter if you wreck it.0

its not that tight should be able to do it by standing on the hub and pushing the allen key around which is either a 10 or 11 mmworst moment ever...
buzzing down twisting single track then.... psssst BANG!!!0
