Hi all, like a complete idiot, I removed the thumb shifter levers from my x9s. (The aim being to get them anodised, but it turns out that cant be done!) Now I have to reassemple them... I have watch various youtube clips and I can get them together but they just dont feel right, too loose. I think I'm having trouble getting the coil spring right.

I have taken them to my LBS and they can do it, and they spoke to SRAM who said that they won't do it as it would be cheaper to buy new ones!!! Not the best response from SRAM...

Does anybody know how to, or a good bike shop who can reassemble them??

By loose, do you mean not enough spring return pressure or that the lever feels 'insecure'?

The former probably means it needs a full turn of preload on the spring.

The latter means doing up the bolt tighter.

If you've taken them to the LBS and they can do it,
Why don't you let them ???
    Cheers

  • Sorry yes, they can't. iPhone typing. I think it's how I'm setting the pring. I'll try and get an extra turn.

I was very disappointed with SRAMs attitude though, kind of tough sh.. Buy a new one! Great service!

They're not really designed to be taken apart

Sram saying buy a new one.. what they mean is it will cost more in labour charges then buying a new one

And Sram don't generally deal with the public - that's why they have distributors and retailers.

True, it should have been Fisher Outdoor, not Sram telling the OP that it's not cost effective to rebuild it

  • It was fisher who told the LBS.

Still, won't buy SRAM out of choice again. Would anybody buy a car with a gearbox which couldn't be maintained?

Try taking a Shimano shifter apart & then see what Madison say to you when you ask if they can rebuild it.

You'll get the same answer as you got from Fisher Outdoor.

I think the correct term is 'beyond economic repair'.
But if you want send it to me. I'll sort it out for £100.

  • Thanks oodboo, unfortunately the version I have must be a different year. I have the same steed as you! The x9 in 2010 had a different spring as shown in step 2 of the reassembly, and does not old it's shape as well. I think that is the key, stacking the spring correctly when reassembling.

Btw don't try to anodise the shifter levers! But the suss linkages come up a treat.
