Upgrade Help to Trek 8500

I am looking to spend around £400 on upgrades to my 2010 trek 8500.
I am torn between upgrading the brakes from the old xt's (never really got on with them) to new xtr race. Or wheels from bontrager rl's....but not sure which wheels to get.
I have already done the easy upgrades (bars - bontrager xxx, post - bontrager xxx, saddle - bontrager rxl carbon and tyres - racing Ralph's) so am really after some suggestions and help.
I mainly use the bike for xc.
Thanks in advance,
MGS

Otherwise got for a nice Hope wheelset, Pro II SP with EX721 rims.

The 2010 is a completley new bike from the 2009; one new feature was the Trek BB91 press fit BB. The OEM BB is the crappy Shimano press fit which lasts about 2 revolutions, if you are lucky.

Will then have to persuade the OH that wheels need replacing in the future.
