Finding the right width for handlebars

My current set are 640mm wide, which occasionally feels a bit narrow. It feels about right on the road when I just have one finger and thumb on the bars, so wider seems the way to go. I have a set of 780mm bars with cut-down marks on order - is there any clever formula for figuring out a ballpark width to start at, or do you just put the grips right at the ends and move them in until it feels right?

I started at the full width of my fubars then when I thought I need this a bit smaller I cut some off. Simples. Now they're down to 730mm which suits me. I didn't feel the need to move my grips in to test them before cutting.

Just try them and cut down in small increments until you get the right feel, I started at 780 on the Reign but I now ride with 760mm which feels spot on.

On the jump bike I have 710mm anything over that feels too big so all depends on the setup and riding your doing.
