Does a tapered headtube make a big difference? Have the chance of purchasing an Orange five frame. The first is a 2010 frame with standard headtube, the second is a 2011 with a tapered headtube. The 2010 is £175 cheaper.

  • i'd say it makes more of a difference than a 20mm fork axle...

I owned a Trance with 1.125" head tube & took out a 2012 demo bike with a tapered head tube, couldn't tell the difference no matter how hard I pushed it.
Most Fives seem to come with Fox Float forks which are pretty flexy anyway so it won't make much difference.

Well I would be using my existing Rockshox Revelation fork with a 1 1/8th steerer, so would have to use a headset reducer.

wont be any stiffer at all then. Its the steerer that gives the stiffness, not so much the headtube.

Thanks. That's the answer I needed to know.
