Specialized Hardrock Sport - upgrade or not?

Hi guys,
Bit of a weird one I don't ride that much but I'm hoping that's going to change in the next couple of months, however, I get a lot of enjoyment from tinkering and upgrading things....I'm an engineer by trade! So would it be worth upgrading forks, brakes, wheel set etc on a 2010 Hardrock (over 6 months or so) or would I be better off getting something like a Blue Pig or Carbon 456 frame and building it up from scratch?
I'd be looking to use it at trail centres, peak district and the such.
Thanks if you're still reading!

The hardrock is a nice XC frame, but the Blue Pig and 456 are different beasts, built for harder riding and much longer forks.0

So would you bother upgrading it based on the type of riding I want to do? I don't want to spend the cash then find the frame isn't worth it...0

How are you getting on with what you have? Do you think a more stable (blut slower, and maybe heavier) set up with long travel would suit you?
My advice would be to buy a fork like the RockShox Revelation, but space it down to 120mm for your bike. Then if you feel a new frame is needed, you can always extend the fork: so a versatile option to start.0 -
Don't fit a 120mm fork to a Hardrock, I tried a 120mm Reba on mine & it rode much better when I dropped it back to 100mm. Hardrock is a pretty decent xc frame. I upgraded mine quite a lot & it was a nice bike. I only sold mine when my riding started getting a bit too aggressive for a xc bike.
Try going for a Reba 120mm fork, spaced down to 100mm with a 20mm axle and some better wheels. a good crank set & aluminium cassette will save quite a lot of weight.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -
Funny that, I rode with with 120mm and it felt much better on harder terrain.0

Come on guys if people of your experience can't agree what hope have I got I prefer lighter bikes that I can throw around a bit rather something that's big and heavy which is partially why I thought about the carbon 456 but if I could save the £400 odd and put it towards the Hardrock then all the better.0

The 456 has a much, much slacker head angle than the HR, even with the HR with a 120mm fork!
I think I'd be tempted to upgrade the HR and see how you go, but with an eye on parts that can be swapped out to a new frame (hence my suggestion of a travel adjustable fork)0 -
Would these be ok? With the 10% off today they'd come in at £270!

I take it the Hardrock has a straight 1 1/8 Steerer size and the steerer on the fork would be long enough so I can just cut it down (or space) and fit?0 -
I agree with SS. If it was me I'd upgrade the Hardrock for now with half an eye on 'upgrading' the frame to something a bit more fun at a later date. Then you can put all the original bits back on the Hardrock
Btw - the 120mm Reba RL did wonders for my 'hopper"Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes

Thanks, does anyone know whether they'll definately fit?0 -
It'll fit, steerer is right. Just make sure you order the right axle option for your wheels.0

Hmm, not sure whether to go for QR or try to future proof by going for 15mm axle then get a new front wheel too....0
-
I got the standard Q/R Reba then got a 9mm adapter with my new wheel - but I bought the forks and the wheel over 6 months apart! If I was buying them at the same time I'd go for the 15mm axle because...it looks better"Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes
