Im after a new set of rubber for my not yet arrived canyon nerve 7.0 am (Will be here wednesday ) I will be at mainly cannock chase and mac forest 2 times monthly and will be using the bike for staying fit locally on the roads . What would be the best rear tyre for these uses ? I have had highrollers for other old xc bikes and they have lasted 1400miles (60a compound ) I have heard bad things about nobby nics

Cannock was great on my old diamond back last week , i did the monkey on tuesday :D great ! .Thanks Lads

Certain tyres are good for certain applications.
I tend to run Continentals as I ride a lot of trail centres and well ridden local routes so all I need is all weather grip.
If I were riding XC over forestry and fields I would plump for a lighter option.
More DH stuff and thorny locality would send me to the heavier puncture resistant options.
Specialised tyres are a good low cost all-round option I have heard but I don't run them any more.
Size is also an issue, 2.2 or 2.3 or 2.4... depends on how you ride.
Thinner is faster up, thicker is faster down.
Hope I haven't bored you.

Why not try the tyres that come with the bike first.

Tried the NN's on my daughters bike, but prefer the Panaracers Fire XC Pro on mine.....and they are great at Cannock, they also work well on my natural local trails.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

I'd try the NNs too for a few rides. I know people that have used them and think they're ok.
  • Yeah , i will then . I wouldnt buy them without testing the nn's first :D Thanks

Maxxis tyres tend to work best at cannock chase imo. Something like another high roller, minion, advantage or ardent would be perfect.

That said, any tyre with fairly soft rubber should work there(60a ish). Nobby nics tend to be hopeless as the rubber is too hard to give grip on the pebbly surface in most parts. The reason why they get good reviews is because on hardpack, non pebbly surfaces such as at sherwood pines they work well, and are very light.

Im currently running a 2.35 high roller front, 2.1 advantage rear. I find this setup to be fairly light, and give good grip all year round. I dont tend to get many flats/torn sidewalls so you could probably get away with the lighest, thinner carcass.
  • I love my current combo of maxxis , i have always used maxxis .

I think people get confused over the different types of nobby nics, ive got 2.25 s in evo rubber which are light and grip like a grippy thing i use them on the blacks at llandegla and love them compared to my previous maxxis mobsters that where too heavy and tended to break away suddenly.

I also have the evo ones that on one were selling. As I mentioned, they work really well on some surfaces, but not on the surface at cannock chase! The new, softer 4x ones might be better though.

Mine are only 3 months old so not sure if they are the new 4x ones but im pretty happy with them over the wet rock mud and gravel at llandegla , im gonna be going to the marin trail next week so ill see how they get on there.

I've been happy with my Evo 2.1 NN's for marathons/races, used them round Coed y brenin as well in a marathon and they were very grippy there too. Not as grippy as the Minions which I've also tried but a lot lighter.
  • My snakeskink 2.4's are pretty hopeless :/ ebay to the rescue !
