Saddle Sore

The other day I took my new bike for a spin, done 15miles and ohmygod, my ass has been hurting for a few days now. I didn't wear any padded cycling shorts, just normal shorts. Will padded shorts eliminate this? or atleast make the ride durable after 10miles?

Also could you recommend padded cycling tights/leggings as they're most likely the ones I will get. Thanks.

i bought some of the cheapest you can get off ebay and use running tights from sports direct under these on cooler days. Did 47 miles the other day and no complaints at all. Will the padding on these cheaper shorts wear away quicker? who knows, probably, but so far so good.

Thor the God of Thunder was riding through the dark sky's making his usual thunderous cries one day, roaring 'I'm Thor, I'm Thor' he cried. I looked up and said ' You've forgotten you've thaddle thilly'

It can take a fair while for your ass and seat to become fully acquainted

But IMO padded trousers will help. I use BIEMME longs (search Ebay) and DHB shorts (wiggle) and both have a pad that works well :)
  • Is the saddle right for your backside? One of the saddle makers even does saddle fitting in their outlets (is it Specialised???). You have to line up your sit bones with the saddle otherwise you end up with a sore botty. Yes, padded shorts help but more important is to get the right saddle.

There are threads and threads about this all over the internet. Meantime, go ride 50 miles asap to make sure you've learned the lesson.

get used to riding, it can take a few weeks before your bum adapts, try not to overdo it at the start as if you get bruised it'll take longer

get some padded bib shorts (bibs are more comfy than shorts) - if you want more length for the cooler days, add some knee warmers (the cycling type, not jane fonda's)

as a starting point, wiggle's dhb range generally seems good value, plus you can see what reviews say about them...

i'd avoid getting too much cycling clothing at the start, if you do ride a lot you'll probably drop a fair bit of weight, so clothes you buy now may not fit after a while

a good pair of padded mitts is worth getting, and a basic jersey

don't be put off by lycra, it's functional, unlike cotton etc. which'll turn into a soaking chafing dragging creasing sticking annoyance once you start going hard
my bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny

I started off with some Karrimoor padded shorts from Sports Direct. Perfectly adequate for me for rides up to 30miles and great value. Since doing rides over that I have started using DHB Aero Bib shorts which are much better.
