I am looking for a new set of wheels. My budget is £800 and I weigh 100kg. I need a stiff set of wheels that are strong for climbing hills and flat road use. I am considering main cosmic carbone sl clinchers . Can anyone recommend them or anything else or or am I best spending £360 for the ever reliable mavic kysriums? Thanks in advance martin

I'm happy enough with my Ksyrium Elites atm, if I were buying something now though I'd probably go with Dura-Ace C24's to shave off a bit more weight. they're supposed to give a bit more comfy ride to although I don't find the Ksyriums harsh.

If your budget is £800. Either buy the Dura-Ace C24's for about £550 and spend the rest on coaching.

Or scrap the wheels, get a second hand power meter and spend the rest of your budget on coaching.

I'm in pretty much exactly the same scenario as you, I'm about 95kg and have a similar budget. I've been considering a set of Campag Shamal/Eurus or possibly a custom Aero set with similar weights i.e 1500ish grams that way I have the lightness for climbs and can hold speed on the flats. That and I think I've fallen in love with aero wheels around 50mm lol. Only problem is I don't know what wheel builder to use or ask for a quote as I'm not to clued up on the hand built wheels and who to use...maybe someone could help with that?

Think I'd go pre-built if looking for cheap 50mm carbon clinchers (Planet-X, Cole etc.), just figure out if you want all carbon or an alu rim/braking surface.

For your weight, carbon clinchers may be a tad fragile.

My Ksyrium Elites are the single best thing I ever did to my bike. They transmit the power much better during climbs, as the spokes and rims are much more rigid so don't flex so much with each peddle stroke. They made my hills much easier.

The aero benefit of deep carbon rims is only worth it if you are spending a lot of time at more than 25mph. The aero benefit is from reducing the amount of spoke hitting the air at the top of the wheel, where the spokes are travelling forward at twice your bike speed. The carbon rim travelling forward at this speed creates less drag than the spokes it is replacing and that is why they work. It's also why track bikes have no spokes at all.

Unless you are riding in the Elite category at your club, the Kysrium Elite wheels will be perfect, will support your weight and at sub £400 are a steal.
