Anyone had any dealing with loss adjusters?
The bike IS covered but due to value they are sending out a loss adjuster to assess everything, having never had to do this does anyone have any advice?
I have a list of all the parts on the bike, got pictures I had taken two weeks ago and got the paperwork CWNT gave me when I got it from him.
Insured value 1399 so I'm not sure what's going to happen.0 -
Dont accept the first offer, you can appeal. when my GT got lifted I was offered £189 even though I had reciepts totalling £450. Took a few phone calls but I got £330 in the end. I now over insure my bikes to cover upgrades.Fig rolls: proof that god loves cyclists and that she wants us to do another lap0

Lad at work had his Meta 5.5 nicked, his commute bike was off the road so used the meta instead, 2nd day a pikey cut a pikey shape hole in the bike cage using bolt cutters and made off with it in broad day light.
anyhow the bike was insured and hes just had the pay out £2200 they paid out for some upgrades and accessories on the bike as well.
Dealing with the loss adjuster required a bit of patience, if you are lucky you might get a loss adjuster who knows a bit about bikes. If you dont you might get one like my mate, the adjustor had seen some BSO's outside of Halfords around the £100 mark and assumed all bikes cost that much.
Basically he was able to show him invoices/reciepts for the bike and the upgrades etc etc
Then lots of examples of the same bike, new and second hand
and a little of why he needed expensive shocks, etc etc ie a little insight into the type of riding he does.
in the end it obviously clicked

Say if (just hypothetically) I stole it, how much would I get for it?
Also (just hypothetically) where would be a good place to sell it so that you guys wouldn't see it?
Would it be worth (just hypothetically) selling it separately on eBay?
On a serious note, that sucks. Hope they catch the silly billy who stole it.<hr noshade size="1"><font color="purple"><center><i><b><font size="2"><font face="Times New Roman"> "Boggis and Bunce and Bean. Aye they were doing a follow up article on the one last week, I just wanted a picture of the bike in the paper to get max exposure, they insisted of one with my ugly mug as well!0

No, Kaise's ugly face in the paper.0 -
It's only the first time, well as long as your not counting the time I was dressed as Pusey or that time I was wearing a balaclava and hanging around the local pro spot with a shovel?!
Think he meant bike theft in Bristol is becoming a problem0 -

There is a gang of people targeting riders of high end bikes, following them home from the trails and stealing their bikes. The same people have stole somthing like 30 bikes in the past week, all of the riders rode the same trails regularly.0 -
think that deserves a Whoooooooosh0

That really sucks. Some thieving scumbags tried to take my Caldera from our communal brick-built bikeshed a few years ago. They went onto the roof, peeled back the corrugated plastic there and had at it with a car jack and some kind of cutting tool. Thankfully, the lock held, although I now have two big dings in the seat- and chainstay. She now lives in the flat with us. Luckily, I have an understanding girlfriend who doesn't mind (too much). It'll go into the garage when we move into our own house in a month or two, ground anchor, big fark off chain etc...Old hockey players never die - they just smell that way...0

Seriously considering hiding a car battery in the shed and connecting it to the bikes* when I lock them up now, that'd learn 'em!

so the insurance loss adjuster has just been round
she asked a few questions took and few pictures of where they have broken in to the door and this is the outcome so far;
Sum insured for £1399 (under insured, my own fault i will be reassessing the value of the ragley)
Sum to replace new for old
-Complete Bike (not at the same spec) 1599
or
-Frame 1199
-All parts including wheels and tyres 1300
- Total 2499
Accessories (covered as they were on the bike at the time it was stolen)
-Kryptonite Lock New Yorker £76.99
-Light (equivalent to my nuke proof as it is no longer available) £289.99
-Pump Topeak morph 31.99
-Total 398.97
As the bike was in a locked building it is covered but as the door is only a Yale lock i may be liable for a £250 voluntary excess as i don't comply with the security criteria for that area of the building.
Total claim value is £2499 (bike) plus £398.97 (access) = 2897.97
How they will pay out is as follows (subject to loss adjusters report);
The bike
£2499 - excess of £250 (see security thing above) = £2249
as i am under insured they will pay out the £1399, so i am £1100 short over all (£850 after the access)
The Accessories (if they do pay for them)
£398.97 - excess of £25 = 373.97
Soooooo
i'll have to get another second hand bike that won't be the same spec unless i put money to a new one that still isn't the same spec! hard lesson learnt, insure you bike for the value to replace it!!
As i am under insured (through my own stupidity)0 -
That's bad news man
Who do people insure their bikes with? I've never really bothered until now, but as I've just spent £300 on parts for the Blender, I feel I should think much more seriously about it.It takes as much courage to have tried and failed as it does to have tried and succeeded.

NFU Mutual are really good, if i had it insured for the proper value and had the receipts for the parts they would just pay out no problem, they are by far the easiest to deal with so far just never seems to happen as quick as you would like.
Its even covered out of the house if you use an approved lock and its locked to something solid or its locked inside a building (like your mates or the pub)0 -

Believe it or not, M&S do a very good policy. I have my Orbea insured for £6k with them.0 -

Yeah, I think I'm covered by my house insurance, but think I may double check just in case I've undervalued them (which the Blender will be!)It takes as much courage to have tried and failed as it does to have tried and succeeded.

Shame about being undervalued and underinsured, but at the end of the day,a pretty decent lesson learned, and you are not being left completely alone, so 45% decent outcome. Shame though!
Does anyone happen to know the price of M&S home insurance roughly? Am back on Saturday, and once we get the keys to our flat we need insurance.0 -

Good question that no one but yourself and the M&S quote system will be able to tell you...
Additionally, M&S changed their policy they used to insure bikes up to £4k per bike no questions asked, this has now reduced to £1k max limit unless you individually name/value them and incurs quite a hefty charge (did a quote out of curiosity, it was triple what I'm paying). However those like myself who were on the old £4k policy get to keep that cover its only reduced to new customers.0 -
We just reinsured (new policy) with virgin. Had to name the bikes, but it didn't affect the premium at all. 1 @ 2k and 1 @ 1k.
Tried M n S at first, but it made a big diff to the premium.0 -
does anyone insure their bikes seperately? as my contents cover only covers bikes up £500!!!!
will be changing it next year0 -
The loss adjuster is "making further enquiries" not sure what that means, i hope they aren't going to try a squirm there way out of it, all i want is my bike back!
i find this so frustrating and stressful!0 -
I've covered mine on contents for the paid value, £900 for the mongoose and £1100 for the zen(when she gets here) and it's put an extra £58 on my cover, just for adding the zen, this covers for home and away, as long as its securely locked to a solid foundation, ie building or non removable furniture and not just on the ground with a lock round the wheel. basically....not really a bike thieves haven here but all the same eh ! but where mine are kept it will be a noisy job to take any of them....0
