Life up north?

Serious question this, having spent a week near Pickering, found a nice house, could get a job quite easily in York, getting fcuked off with living in flatland, are there any reasons why we should not move? ie schools and stuff. Mrs
Spong could get a job quite easily and has a chance of something at Castle Howard.

Mrs is resisting but I want a change after nearly 20 years of same old.

York is a nice cycling city, but be prepared to travel a little to get to trail spots - the vale of york is flat too!

I know the vale is quite flat, looking at Pickering or one of the Kirbys and working in York. Would be quite a change as I could buy a decent sized house and land for horses for what we've got now. I'm already missing the space after two days, I grew up wandering the lakes and moors and fancy going back but don't want to be seen as a feck wit tourist.

  • I live in York. Cracking area, but like SS say's to get to trail spots its a fair drive, though you'd be alright in Pickering or those surrounding areas.

I will move some day soon, probably go south but I just know if I do I will always be wanting to move back, who wouldn't want to live in the north... North Wales, Peak district, Dales, Moors, Northumberland, Lakes and then into Scotland. All within about 3 hours of York. What great views and fantastic riding.

I have to say, I love living in North Wales. To my immediate east, I have the Snowdonia mountains, and to my immediate west I have the coast and it's stunning sunsets. Even though I live somewhere rural, we're very close to the main transport arteries, so it's no hassle to go somewhere else for the day. And there's an abundance of large supermarkets and so on. Small village life, without any of the pitfalls usually associated with small village life, if you will.

However, although the schools are generally good, the jobs situation, and average wages round here is dire.
I've lived here my whole life, so it doesn't bother me much, but I can imagine that someone moving here from the south of England would be in for an unwelcome shock.

If you're OK for work/money then I reckon the main things are whether you will be OK without friends/family nearby and whether there'll be enough to do if you're living in the sticks. After being in the SE for a long time it can feel very different.

I lived in Cleveland (the crap part of N. Yorkshire) 'till I was 18 then moved down South. I'm kinda stuck with that due to my line of work, but now almost all of my mates are in the South East and things would feel really a bit quiet moving back North.

Pickering's a decent place' one of my mates grew up not far from there.

You'd be close to Dalby; and the Moors wouldn't be too far either. You'd still need to travel a bit but the diversity of riding would be greater.

It is a rural place so your family may find it difficult to adapt depending on where you are now. I can't comment too much on schooling, but my mate said that he had to travel to Malton for his secondary school and sixth form; from the sounds of it you won't have a great deal of choice in where the little'uns go.

Still a very nice part of the world to live in though. :)

In terms of relocating we live a long way from any of our immediate family and it can be difficult if one of them is ill or if you're used to seeing them regularly. You can't just 'pop round' and see them it becomes an expedition and with the best will in the world you do tend to lose touch. Just a thought.

Your spot on, we only live 30mins away and that can be a pain sometimes.

Up North is a relative term, to some York is way down south. Nice part of the world though.

And to people in Spain, even the South of France is up north.
    Who'd have thunk it?
  • I've lived in Yorkshire my entire life... plenty to do and especially for mountain bikers. Visited Sherwood Pines (just South of God's County in Shottinghamshire), what a place!!!
Only downside to a southerner moving up north is we don't drink shandy up here (lol).

I used to live in york. Really liked it, but the city itself is a long way from places to ride, and the villages/towns near places to ride are a long way from supermarkets, work etc. Petrol is more expensive there too, which is a problem as because of the spread out nature you will likely find you are travelling a lot.
