I've been offered a week off parent-watching duties and want a v cheap med-island holiday leaving from Stanted.
Sardinia looks the ticket .
How is the cycling/food/accommodation/traffic.
Can camp if necessary but prefer to travel light.
Any experiences of the island?

Any other potential islands with direct flights?

Can't comment on the cycling aspect, but a few years ago we did a 2 week fly drive around the north of the island stopping wherever we fancied.

The terrain can certainly be hilly, the people are really friendly - we stayed in agroturism b&bs where you would often eat meals with the family.

    Great place - well recommended.

It's a good place to go. I've been a couple of times but mainly off-road.

As far as accommodation is concerned, bear in mind that tourism in Italy tends to be very seasonal. Sardinia may be a bit different because it is so well served by the low-cost airlines but my experience in other parts of Italy is that outside of the main towns it's well worth phoning ahead - a lot of hotels and B&Bs are owner-managed and in the quiet times the owners may go off to work in their allotment (or whatever) rather than hang across just in case someone might turn up.

Don't miss the nuraghe at Burrumini (a UNESCO world Heritage site), and, if you happen to be nearby, the murals in the village of Orgosolo.

Food is good. Fish on the coast and meat inland.

As far as alternatives are concerned there's Corsica - I know BA fly there but I don't know about Ryanjet. Corsica is a definite must-see but I wouldn't say go there rather than Sardinia.

Just spotted this - too late.

    I know Sardinia quite well.

    Did you go MichaelIW?

If so, I'd be interested in how you got on.

In the end I didnt get time off from duties, I may be ablt to fit a tour in later and Sardinia is still an option. It is probably too hot in July/Aug.
  • "It is probably too hot in July/Aug." We always toured in summer before moving here to run our guesthouse for sports people. Local road races all through July and August, so not too hot. Nice road book of routes http://www.sardegnadigitallibrary.it/in ... &id=202368 Peter

Did a self guided tour arranged by Sandro Cresto at http://www.dolcevitabiketours.com/ years ago with my wife. We went in May and it was quite hot, but a terrific trip. Great cycling, very challenging if you want it to be (flatter on the coast, hillier inland) and beautiful scenery. Highly recommended and Sandro did a great job.
