Thank You Lycraholic for your response to Symo. Mine was going to be more vitriolic but you said it much better.
Having both rowed and cycled myself I know the sort of effort rowing takes.
As for his rich overprivileged statement well that says more about Symo than the students at either Oxford or Cambridge.
As to why it should be shown. Why not. Compared to the months of broadcasting of football it is one day when rowing takes centre stage. As with many sports, other than football, there is little if any coverage of rowing other than the boat race and the Olympics on the terrestrial channels. When was the last time they showed Squash or Badminton on the TV.0 -
I don't care for it as an event personally but I'm bemused by the suggestion that coming from a wealthy family makes you immune to pain through physical exertion? Fishing or an idiot...please declare which.0

Any update on the lad who was in hospital? By the way, were there any English rowers in the event today? Seemed to me that most were Australian, American or Canadian!
What do I ride? Now that's an Enigma!0 -

I must admit I don't get the fascination with the boat race, just why is it on telly every year? If Manchester and Salford (or Birmingham and Aston) universities held an annual football match or cycling race would the BBC be crawling all over it? I presume it's just a history thing.
Most varsity rugby matches (Manchester vs Manchester Metropolitan included) are shown on sky.FCN: 60 -

Had to laugh when I overheard some of the commentary "These men really know how to suffer"; I mean really? Don't see them doing 260km and pave too do you.
Why on earth is this on TV, does it relate to a load of ex-public schoolboys from Oxford and Cambridge running the BBC since it's inception?
Actually most of the rowers are post-grads (21-28 years old)-> a lot of Americans and a few Germans.. not many posh British 'kids'.
and with ~21000 students at both Oxford and Cambridge at any one time.. it seems like there are a significant number of people with an interest. not to mention that proud parents and grandparents of students who want to indulge in the Oxbridge Culture.
With the 1st race in 1829... its also a traditional event and part of British culture -> That's around the time that Christmas trees started to be used by English Nobility (adopted from European royalty). I bet you don't shun the tradition of Christmas trees as they have their roots in English nobility?0 -
Ooh, Doombar (my favourite beer, Cornish!) had an ad - hope this is not them going all commercial and rubbish though!
That's the only interesting thing I really take from it, Epic Cool Runnings moment from Oxford though! We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

Errr I did row, I used to live in Teddington so was able to keep a Single in the garage and not have to pay silly fees at the boathouse on the river, however I don't rate it as much as hours on the bike IMHO. Plus I would rather be up at 6 for the bike than 4 (plus I am too short to ever be fast (2:20 was my fastest time and that was on a concept 2 so can't even claim that counts)) and compared to cycling rowing is hardly a cheap sport).
As for the over-privileged bit, yup they were mainly non UK crews, all from the finest state education systems in their collective lands so i declare fishing (damn spotted) I am not a republican just pointing out that you don't see many people from the shit towns list on this board making into boat race crews do you?
I will be watching P-R today though. Rain hopefully +++++++++++++++++++++

Does the crew have to finish with all of the rowers in the boat?
Would it have made more sense for the boat to stop for a couple of seconds to let lad with the broken oar to jump overboard and get out of the way before the rest carried on without 16odd stone of dead weight sat there like an onboard anchor?0 -

Why?
Its like cycling a tandem with a partner whose pedals aren't connected to the drive-train.
In the case of rowing they've lost 1/8th of their power and are carrying dead weight.
Not really.
We did it a lot in training. It's just like pushing a slightly bigger gear.
You should be putting in as much energy and effort as you can regardless of whether there's 7 or 8 rowing, right?0 -

If he got in as an Undergrad I'd be impressed, but he did post-grad which isn't in the same league of competitiveness.
Is It interesting that he doesn't give his Undergrad degree? That's a much better was of getting the measure of a person.
Its not surprising that he's turned out this way if he went to LSE though.. its a breeding ground for socialist/Marxist extremism.0 -

She's probably already had a good going over by the 8 man blues boat.. and maybe even the Isis boat too! so I'd probably give her a miss.0 -

If I can refer you to my second post on Page 1, you'll see I was very careful not to do any 'Xchanging'."There's a shortage of perfect breasts in this world, t'would be a pity to damage yours."0
