A Hardtail that could handle the commute...

Apologies this is a bit of a sister thread to my previous adventure bike thread viewtopic.php?f=20005&t=12846133
Just wondered if anyone could recommend a Hardtail that is worth using as a commuting bike. I was intially thinking of an CX/Adventure (like the Salsa Faro) but then I got into thinking that a HT maybe more benifical come winter (It would allow me to keep the Anthem for good weather). I was thinking of something that has a stiff front end or lock out and with the right tyres would blitz a 30m commute.
Budget around £1000
Any thoughts......

Any, buy the best xc bike for your budget and change the tyres. Could also stick some ridgids on0

Boardman urban looks pretty decent for a commute hardtail and its only £599

Or if you want something with a suspension fork the boardman pro is £999
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... PDPz1#tab2
You can get 10% off those with NUSAPR12 code.0 -
Nice effort with the code cheersDawes Tamark DX (RIP)

You don't really need lockout, just wind the preload up, a 30minute commute is how far for you?
+1 on the Boardman pro, or consider the Grand Canyon 7.0 http://www.canyon.com/_uk/mountainbikes ... tml?b=2540 for just over £1K or the 6.0 for under that mark.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -

a CX bike , most now have rack and mudguard mounts, ideal for commute and touring , for 30 mile a day I would have a road bike, you know it make sense0

For 15mile each way I'd certainly go for a road or CX bike........Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

Unless you're going off-road on your commute I'd get a roadie/hybrid/CX bike for that distance (depending on how rough/smooth the route is and what type of bike you prefer). Esp. if you've already got an MTB."I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0

You could build one for that money, say:
OnOne Whippet frame: £300
Superstar Switch/Crestwheels: £220
Exotic carbon fork: £90
SLX 10 speed groupo: £225
Hygia disc brakes from DX: £70
Leaves 100 quid to finish - might need a bit more, but the bike should be 22lbs at the most.0 -
I love the wippet that would be a real option,
The reason I dont want a road bike is I want something that could handle the odd adventure, so of road touring. So something that could support panniers would be ideal. Would really like a Salsa fargo but its out of my price point.Dawes Tamark DX (RIP)
