I need to buy some cycling glasses, budget of £40 or a shade over.

I quite like the Endura Piranha, £40 here > http://www.freeborn.co.uk/endura-piranha-glasses
I've read some very good reviews on them, and like the fact that I can wear one pair of glasses for all riding (?), and they wouldn't look out of place off the bike. Reservations being I can't locally try before I buy, and how will they work in the dark?

OR, should I buy a set of glasses with 3 or 4 lenses? I'm not sure I can be bothered swapping lenses all the time and won't be carrying them with me so will have to make a decision at the start of the ride anyway!

What are people's experiences?

  • No need to spend that much.

I have these and cant find a single fault with them:

You can also get them with dark lenses, for the price, I'd have a seat of each, but I already have Oakleys for the summer.

You ride in oakleys yet recommend an £8 pair of glasses?

  • The man has a budget, good luck finding Oakleys for under £40. My Oakleys are not used exclusively for mtb'ing. However, the bolle specs are, and they are fantastic.
  • Thanks, I already have Oakleys, I don't need a second pair. I'm just after some glasses to keep specifically for cycling.

    Quite like the Avenir Smokes.

I just need to weigh up the multi-lens vs a single reactive lens argument.

Just to hijack your thread a little (apologies!), I'm also looking for some new cycling glasses, like the idea of photocromic lenses, and have found the Spiuk Zelerix for £47 delivered here - http://www.totalcycling.com/a-z/sunglas ... WHITE.html

Anyone have any opinions on them please, as they look great for the price?
  • I wouldnt be so quick to dismiss bolle safety glasses, you cant beat them for the money, there are also different models.

If you want to spend more obviously its up to you, but google bolle, and they are highly rated.

The only thing with most of the safety glasses is that they don't offer any UV protection.

Thank you, I was hoping that photochromic lenses would eliminate the need for this and still offer the best of both worlds?

I've got the Endura Stingray which come with 4 different lens shades, a soft case and a hard case. I actually forget I have them on as they are so light and comfortable. Highly recommended. (£33 on CRC)
If at first you don't succeed, spend some more money on kit!

  • I have Piranhas myself. I emailed Endura asking for the nearest stockist. They quickly replied with three within fifteen miles.I went to the nearest shop, had a try, job done. I am very pleased with them.

That's great, thank you! I must admit I am still favouring these, I take it you're happy with the fit and the speed of the lens reaction when going through woodland etc?

  • Well I've picked up some new Piranha's cheap on ebay, so I'll run with them for the summer as I like the fact I can wear them off the bike as well. Maybe later in the year when dark riding etc comes into play again I'll try and find some Avenir Smokes :D

If they are to modern safety standards then they will be UV safe.

Each to their own when it comes to wasting money but I would cry if I lost or destroyed a pair of expensive Oakleys.
I have tried a dozen makes, literally.
They get lost on the trail when attached to the frame during dark passages and climbs and then forgotten..
left on the table at the cafe..
    Frame cracked changing lenses..
Slips off the nose when sweaty..
    Fogs up..
Can hurt the top of your ears if poorly designed..
Tiny (I mean £ucking microscopic) nut comes off a tiny (again microscopic) bolt which holds the darn thing together and your left with something to tape together and hopefully bin when you get home or end up looking like a Woody Allen groupy..
Cut a long story short, I settled on a brand called Sunwise. They are under £30. Look OK and function well. Do not slip in sweat and if you lose them just buy another,, no tears..

    I've just ordered a pair of these for £23 - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=72784

Photocromic NXT lenses and 2 other lenses too, hopefully they're decent. :)

You're going to scratch, crash & break them, lose them, so don't go with expensive brand names.

£30-ish got me Madison D'arcs with triple lenses. Cheap stuff but good enough and the bits are designed to break apart to be reassembled after a crash or whatever, rather than smashing into pieces. Cheap replacement parts too.

Or the £8 Bolle safety stuff. Cheap enough to buy plenty of spares or different tints.

Bolle Axis Contrast... cheap safety glasses with adjustable arms. Mine adjust to so that the arms rest on the interior harness of my Xen, rather than behind my ears, which is very comfortable.

Since we are on the topic of eyewear, I just want to ask whether do you have any difficulty in finding an eyewear with straight temple/arm that fits properly on your head? I have tried several and most of them don't fit very well, such as the lens lifting off my nose bridge or the lens is too close to my eyes. Do you encounter such problems?
