Mtb wheel skewer size?

Probably seems a silly question but can any one tell me how to measure wheel skewers.
I'm looking to buy new ones but don't know what point to measure the skewers. Is it end to end or the inside??? :?:

Its a 9 speed cassette.

    you dont really need to. front and rear are fairly well settled on their MTB sizes.

    Don't know which ones to go for?
    I could get the xtr ones or is that just paying for the name??

    My bike is full xtr but when it comes to skewers i suppose it doesn't matter??
