Am I unusual in finding it often easier to climb, even for prolonged periods, whilst standing?

Not unusual, I used to be the same but that had more with not getting in an easier gear. Spin 90rpm and you'll find seated riding easier. Leave the standing for short climbs and powering over the climbs to leave your mates in your dust. Ha!

Nah, that's not it. Soemtimes I really do just find it easier to stand rather than spin, like my muscles just don't feel like spinning for whatever reason. I can ride standing for some considerable distance anyhow.

I don't think there is a right and wrong.
Just do what your fitness level and terrain demands for the ride you are on.
15 years ago I used to be able to stand and stomp up almost any hill.
Now I can barely get up some of the same gradient hills on my feet, never mind with a bike

However, when riding off road I find there is no particular need to stand on the pedals unless you are pushing on and it is a short sharp non technical climb. Most of the ups for me are sat spinning or hovering just off the nose of the saddle bent over the bars like a knackered pensioner :D
