Roof rack - ability to adapt when change car

Hi,
For transporting my bike(s) I've got a boot mounted bike rack, which I hardly ever use. I just fold down the seats, take the wheels off and put bike in. Also, unless I take the wheels off when the bikes are on the back, they obscure the lights so I really need a light board.
I've had roof rack before but never with a bike rack. I don't have a roof rack for my current car and thinking of getting one as it will be useful. Might then sell the rear rack and get a bike rack for the roof instead.
However, one thing that's putting me off roof racks is when you change car you need to buy a new rack, or feet/brackets etc.
Can anyone recommend a roof rack system that easy to adapt when you change car? Ideally I'd like a rack that if I get a different car in the relavtively near future can I easily get the bits to change it to fit.

........I think I might have answered my own question after looking at Thule's site.
But would be good to know if people have found this easy to do, i.e. buy a new fitting kit when you switch car.0 -
Thule are about the best for interchangeability. Bonus is, parts hold prices well so you're unlikely to loose much if you have to sell any bits that don't fit any potential new car.0
