Has anyone ridden across the salter fell route? Is it worth tackling or is it essentially just a long slog along a fire road!? A quick peak on YouTube brought up a load of videos of motocross riders which makes me think I'll end up being terrorised!

Havent ridden the old Roman Hornby rd for a while but I think vehicles are banned now so might be quieter. It used to get pretty manic with M/bikes and 4x4 winkers.
Fig rolls: proof that god loves cyclists and that she wants us to do another lap
  • Thanks for the info, might be quiet then! Going to slaidburn for two nights soon, so thought i'd spend a day round gisburn then give this salter fell malarkey a go on t'other day

Salter Fell route is basically a landrover type of track all the way. It has been improved at the north end in recent years making it all rideable. On the Slaidburn side it is a bit rougher and more rutted - some loose sections so watch those. But nothing more complicated than a double track and nothing very technical. Great scenery though and it feels remote. There is a nice cafe in Wray to visit before the return leg - we went out via road over Cross of Greet then cut across bridleways and minor roads to Wray and then came back over the Salter fell. A lot of climbing - about 3,000 ft I think. Enjoy. :D
  • Thanks for that. Was thinking of just going out to Wray over the fell, then doubling back to Slaidburn. If I do a loop as you suggest, is it best to cross the fell in a particular direction?

Just had a look at making a loop with cross o greet, how far would you say that was?

I think it i best to come back over fell from Wray to Slaidburn - go out via Cross o Greet. When you drop over the otehr side look out for a small road on left to Whitray - you can then pickup a bridelway from there over Bottom Rd - it cuts the corner to Wray. Whole loop is about 30 miles - 50% off-road. Get OS Map OL 41 if you don't have one - it' all on there. :D
  • Yeah I picked up that map last week. I'll take your advice and go that way round. Gonna have a crack at it next Saturday, although I fell off last week and hurt my ankle so it depends on that getting better! :?
