Back wheel howling when freewheeling

My FS has developed an occasional annoying howl when freewheeling at pace. It feels like it's coming from somewhere at the back of the bike, feels like the whole frame is vibrating. Can't work out if it's just a fitting or cable hitting an unfortunate frequency from vibration. The noise stops as soon as I move the pedals. Any ideas? Bearings maybe? It's doing my head in....

Thx in advance.

Is there something trapped behind the cassette? Take it off and have a look.

Thanks - did some googling and it looks like it could be a freehub problem, so have some stripping and cleaning to do.

    Cheers,

What rear hub? Magic freehubs have the well known 'screatch of death'!

You mean Mavic, yeah? Mine is Mavic, took it off, stripped and cleaned it and it's right as rain. It used to have quite a loud ratchet click as well, but that's now also all but gone.
