currently riding Fulcrum 5 rims
rode my first 75 mile sportive of the year last weekend
buddied up with a guy on a £5k bike the reynolds carbon rims (£1400)
a bit out of my price range. i kept up apart from the initial acceleration in particular on the climbs
on that basis thinking about upgrading to the fulcrum zero's
Will i feel the difference between the 5's and the zero's?
any other ideas for the £800 quid mark?
Cheers!

Similar question I was gonna ask.....What do folk recommend for the budget upto the £800 / £1000 mark on a new set of clincher wheels???

He accelerated faster becuase he's stronger than you. His wheels had nothing to do with it.

If you want new wheels for other reasons, you like the look of them or whatever, then spend away. But if you hope for a functional difference on the scale you report, you will waste your money and be disappointed.
  • dont think he was!! left him for dead at 65miles
he suggested his rims were helping physics i think

Whatever. You set yourself against each other physically. In one contest he won... the other, you won. The bicycle wasn't involved. That's flannel seeded by salesmen.

I think you are after a new set of wheels, not new rims

I upgraded from Racing 5s to a set of Dura Ace C24 clinchers and I only noticed a very slight difference in acceleration. However, I did cut off a big chunk of time in an uphill time trial. While there is no scientific prove to this particular case, I do think a lighter pair of wheels will make you faster. Hope that answers your question.

They won't make you faster, nice wheels but if you have a crash you will have to walk home and the spokes are a ridiculous price.
