new shock for lapierre x control 310 2010

just got myself a lapierre x control 310 2010 ,my first foray into full suss , having read the reviews of my new bike it seems the rear shock is utter mince and could be doing with being upgraded , having no clue about rear shocks i need to know what to get ? seems to be a fox is the sensible choice , - i will be buying used , also how do i find out what size i need ? if indeed there are variants? and any tips on buying a used shock would be very helpful

    Measure it.

    But the new one will be most likely be better Han any used on. Also you will have no warranty.
