So I'm 'just riding along' on mile 25 of a lovely hilly session, slowly passing on the left of some near-stationary traffic, when I suddenly black out and go down hard. Still clipped in, lying dazed on the ground, it takes about twenty cars to go past for someone to even bother to roll down the window and ask if I'm OK.

Makes you wonder, doesn't it... (also, my poor Cervelo, weep weep :( )

perhaps they assumed you were just having a rest stop

there are all sorts of idiots out there.. today this guy in a BMW almost knocked me off overtaking me in a dangerous place -> then pulled out of a junction 200m down the road almost totalling another cyclist.

In the spirit of the original point, I don't think we should let this thread go on for too long without someone asking:

Are you okay? You blacked out just when riding along? Should you maybe make an appointment with your doctor, ASAP?

    Anyway, hope you're okay.

Yeah, I'm going to see my GP. (Pretty lucky that it didn't happen when I was descending at 50mph!)

Brace yourselves for the inevitable "oh god my Cervelo is scratched am I doomed" thread in Workshop... ;)

I recall an edition of a Radio 4 programme called All in the mind last year, when one of
the topics discussed was about forgetfulness. An eminent doctor on the programme
said it was probably caused by "microsleeps", that some people have from time to time.
These are sleep periods that are extremely short in duration. Might not be related to
the o/p, but just thought I'd mention it.

    75! impressive.

Falling cats reach a terminal velocity of about 60mph, you could have overtaken one :D

Do you have a picture of a cheap cycle computer on a desk to prove this figure?

...In the same piece (BBC news?) which was about cats falling out of windows of high rises it said that people and horses have a terminal velocity of about 120mph.

I can see how they could work out the human figure but horses...WTF

It was an offshoot of researching whether cats really always land on their feet, done by the same team who researched why toast always lands butter side down. They discovered that it wasn't the toast's fault, it was the height of your kitchen side. :D

Go to the docs with blackouts/ fainting and you could lose your driving license.

Or don't go and you might kill someone. What if this blackout had occurred when driving?

Sorry, didn't come across well... you should be prepared to lose your license, i have a friend and work mate who both lost their license for a while, the work mate lost his for nearly 12 months.

I assumed he meant that he came down hard for a more common, although unfortunate, reason and then blacked out....? Am i being too positive?

Sorry, I read it as you were justifying NOT going to the docs, not what might happen.

Glad you are getting checked out...

No; blacked out and then went down. Only for a few seconds; but the first time it's really happened, a little weird. :|

Same thing happened to a bloke doing a 24 hour MTB ride last year (in the first half and hour). No apparent reason, just blacked out and went down on a corner but possibly down to lack of food or effort of riding causing a blood pressure drop? I've also seen it happen to a lady driving a car, fortunately it was on the access road to a stable and the only damage was a few dents in some parked cars. In that instance it was thought that passing through some trees on a sunny day with the changes in light may have triggered something, she had her licence removed and returned about 6 months later after no further incidence and nothing showing up in tests.

No, it was only 10 minutes into the event and he was riding as part of a 4 man team relay. Might have overdone the Buttcombe beer the previous night though!

Motorists have no respect for cyclists when we use the road. I was crossing this busy road near my house the other week and this black car was indicating to pull out from the side of the road. He pulled out and there was no cars coming so I began to cross after he had left. As I made it to the middle of the road and began to cross the second side, this woman in a red car pulled straight out, no indicators what so ever, grinding to a halt as she saw he in front of her.
Fair enough she might not have seen my but then she started to stare me down as if I was in the wrong when in fact she was being oblivious to other people...
