Hit and run

Hi, since this is my first post I thought I'd introduce myself before I commence the rant and raving!

I'm currently 23 and live in Liverpool and ride around 200ish miles per week, and usually enjoy my rides, as I'm only a fair weather rider! (I know! The shame!) I mainly use my bike to keep fit and for enjoyment!

On my way home from the other halfs place, coming down a road I approached a round about, on riding round I see a boy racer coming towards the same round about, thinking nothing about his silly choice of car and stupidly big rims on a tiny Peugeot I attempt to come off at my exit, taking up primary as the road becomes quite narrow the same boy racer has gone all the way around the round about and has tried squeezing his silly French matchbox between me and the kerb, which is about 4 foot of space.

To put it into perspective, I now have a wing mirror shape on my back, no skin on my left knee or my elbow and a very painful back when walking, but what annoyed me most, was the car behind me, the woman driver slows down, looks at me on the floor and then drives onto the opposite lane around me and drives on after seeing me wiped out by a car

Also, the car that hit me didn't even stop...not even to collect his wing mirror which has now been handed into the police.

So my question, seeing as how this incident was caught on cctv, but his registration plate was not seen, what options am I left with regarding work? Calling in sick isn't an option for me, so I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place...

Sorry to hear about your incident.

Sick leave from your employer should be granted - you're not "ill" but still "unable to work".

I've seen successful results from organised local campaigns - get the local paper involved, spam Twitter and Facebook in the local area... "Have you seen this car?" etc. Boy racers tend to stay local - they've spent £000s on plastic tat for their cars, they can't afford petrol.

Have you spoken to all the local garages - particularly the ones where 'tuned' cars hang out? Just drop round, leave a number to call if they have someone come in looking for a wing mirror for a small blue Peugeot. Say there's a crate of beer in it for them... You could probably find the model of the car by the part number on it (Plod probably won't check this), or if you took a photo post it up and I'll have a look :)

The police did mention about the part code and trying to match it, but that's a long shot in the dark!

If you've reported the incident, shouldn't you get a crime report number thing?

Presumably you can take that to your employer.

yeah.. and its on video.. so you have evidence of the incident... i don't see how not getting his registration affects your ability to work?

Had to go into work for a chit chat with the boss, seems if I'm well enough to walk (hobble) I'm well enough to drive the wagon...

It's like slave labour! All he needs is a whip!
  • Sickeness: get a fit note from your doctor describing what you actually are fit to do. Employer has little option then.
The driver - a high percentage of journeys made are regular journeys at the same time etc, I would seriously consider sitting yourself discretely at the same roundabout for half an hour either side of the time of the incident for a few days, and specifically the day of the incident. If you clock same car, get the VRM, note whether it has busted wing mirror, take said findings to police.
I can't comment on what they will do, but if you came to me with that information, added to the video, it's close to slam dunk.
The other benefit of taking yourself to doctors is to get your injuries recorded so that they are evidenced properly when the scroat gets his justice.
Some people are like slinkies - not much use for anything, but they bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

You must go to the doctor - might be useful for work, and may be useful if/when the driver is caught. Also, do you have a description of the driver and vehicle that passed you after you were knocked off? Isn't it illegal to pass the scene of an accident without stopping like that? Perhaps I'm making that up, but it should be!

+1 - Everyone can 'self certificate' for the first 5 working days so in theory anyone can take 5 consecutive days off without needing a docs note, however if you're a contractor and depending on what kind of sickness benefit at work you have you may or may get ssp or an amount of your pay.

Quite honestly I'd've taken the week off - it's always the days after an accident that you feel worse than the day itself.

Your supervisor is not a doctor and he has other factors in his insistance that you're fit to work - which is why he's in violation of telling you your fit to work. If you have further complications and you're on his recommendation to work then it gets very sketchy for him.

Not only the points raised by Rick, but if you are medically unfit to drive and have an accident you will automatically be liable. You need a medical assessment for your injuries compensation so get it done and have your ability to carry out your normal work assessed at the same time. Contact the Motor Insurers Ombudsman for details of how to claim against them for uninsured drivers. Chances are they'll argue you don't know he's uninsured but it may spur them into life.

Re the investigation; the police can check the registration of all Pugs of that model and colour registered locally. They will be able to see which ones are insured and have been modified or not. A simple task to the local bobbies to knock on the door and do an owner enquiry with the registered owners may gain a result. They can also monitor any local cruises for this dickhead.
I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.

Not a long shot at all - if they do that it will definitely correspond to a specific model. Wing mirrors aren't generic parts like, I don't know, windscreen wipers or indicator lenses - they're different on every car.

Oh, and get ye to the doctor's. Now. ;)

Oh really...must be good to know that your boss is medically proficient too and able to diagnose and assess your injuries by your ability to walk (hobble). Some people are so talented aren't they? Must be so reassuring to be employed by such a caring manager who is only interested in your welfare.....what an A**hole!

Get to the Doc's and get a thorough examination pronto. Let the experts assess your injuries and if you are fit to drive.

Your employer should be able to give you sick leave. Because you aren't ill but you just got hit by a car, you still aren't fit for work. That's bad enough that you got into a hit and run but seriously? That stupid woman just looked and drove past? Fair enough if you were standing up but if you were lying on the floor, then that's bad..
