Deptford hit and run

I know there are some other forumers who live reasonably close by. Just wondering if you'd heard about this:

Deptford teenage cyclist dies after hit and run
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-17504953

Apparently the 17 year old who died was a really decent guy. What really winds me up about the whole thing is: why did the jacks let the driver out on bail? My legal knowledge is admittedly limited but I would have thought that someone who has a propensity to steal cars and kill people with them is probably (a) a flight risk and (b) a danger to the public.

Am I just being sensitive?

Was it a stolen car? Or, did the owner claim it was as part of his feeble attempts to get away with murder?

I know it's not technically murder, just a turn of phrase that kind of fits.

Ah yes, you're quite right. When I read this article:

    http://www.newsshopper.co.uk/news/lewisham/9611848.17_year_old_cyclist_killed_in_Deptford_hit_and_run/

I missed the "not" in "not reported stolen"!

Although someone local posted on LFGSS that the car was stolen, so now not sure...

I was guessing he may have reported it after the event as one of the oldest excuses in the book. Terrible shame, I accept that accidents can happen and we don't know the circumstances. But, I hope they throw the book at the driver for not stopping. That is unforgiveable.

Yes, I put that blog post up, because that's the estate I live on, and in all likelihood he was coming over to visit friends downstairs. Now that the Press Association have written the article, the local papers and even the BBC have covered the story (if all they do is to cut-and-paste why don't we just go straight to the PA?). Before there was any press interest, however, there was no official report anywhere apart from the traffic delays websites but there were lots of varying accounts on the local estate and I also mistakenly passed on the ''stolen car'' line onto forums.

I spoke to TJ's uncle at the scene yesterday. He'd just had to tell the mother. Very distressing.

TQ for that. Yes, up until about yesterday morning, no news on the incident. I suspected it was your blog.

Saw a lot of flowers on the railings this evening, along with a group of 30 or so friends paying tribute.

    RIP TJ

That's on my commute, if it was in the way to deptford bridge cars normally race down there so I'm not surprised and I always ride away from the kerb in the bus lane a bit more there to stop idiots pushing past close.

I hope they people affected get justice.
