New to bike touring - Want to do a good trail with the kids!

Hi folks,
If anyone has any good advice it would be warmly welcomed. I'm contemplating a week of bike touring with the kids (10 & 12). We all have good mountain bikes and I would like to push the boundary somewhat - pack a couple of tents and sleeping bags and head out on a good trail route for perhaps a week. Can anyone suggest a good route, which is mainly away from busy roads (good bridleways/canal towpaths/country roads etc) and of reasonable difficulty (ie not too intense) - preferably in the North of England (we live in York). We would probably look to be getting up early and have a good ride and then camp early afternoon. I was mulling over the idea of the coast to coast cycle route.
Thoughts anyone? Thanks v. much.

Check with Adventure Cycling. There are amazing trails on the east coast! The Underground Railroad, for one. They have detailed maps and tips and tons of info. Also, check out crazyguyonabike.com for inspiring trips and tales from all sorts of tours, long and small. It also has categories for trips with kids. We did a 3 week adventure with our then 10-month-old and I can't wait for our boys to be old enough to tow their own weight and truly enjoy the experience. Keep us posted!0

The Peak district Railway trails could all be linked up using Byways and Bridleways and back roads ...
Great scenery and lots of campsites ...
High peak and Tissington trails
Monsal trail
Manifold way
Also Carsington water Is a 13k loop that can be done when riding the High Peak trail...
Lots of good guide books available along with OS Landranger 119 ...

hi, take a look at the trans pennine trail. it leaves southport and follows mainly off road and disused railway lines from the irish coast to the east coast. when it reaches selby it branches off and finishes behind the main stand of york racecourse, so its a good incentive for the boys to ride home.

Thank you very much for your great suggestions guys, I think we will try out the latter stages of the Trans-Pennine trail (from York) as a practice run. We have spent the week packing bikes with kit and we are good to go, but the weather is not really running in our favour, so all very frustrated to say the least
