I would like to replace my 8 speed chainset with 9 speed. Last 11000 km I used 9 speed FC-M442 square taper crankset with 8 speed cassette but I cannot find any on web anymore. The one I would like to go for is FC-M430 with BB-UN55 but on shimano techdocs website is listed as a compatible bracket BB-UN26 (-E):http://techdocs.shimano.com/media/techdocs/content/cycle/SI/FC/SI_1LZ0A/SI-1LZ0A-001-ENG_v1_m56577569830690265.pdf. Can anyone please explain me what is the difference between BB-UN26 (-E), BB-UN26 (-K) and BB-UN26?
Can I use BB-UN55 instead of UN26 (-E)?
Does UN-55 comes in (-E) and (-K) versions?
Thanks

E means is meant to be used with an E type front mech or spacer. K is meant to be used with a type of chaincase if I remember correctly. UN55 will work fine in the right length.
8 speed Alivio chainsets are still available:

I would like to rebuild my drivetrain to 9 speed and that's why I'm looking for 9 speed square crankset. My plan was to replace old crankset with Deore but the price for facing the frame for hollowtech BB put me off.
So if I'm correct in the case I don't have E-type mech or chaincase I don't have to worry about E or K and just buy BB in correct lenght?
Also what makes me confusing is that for the same chainline I need different spindle lenght. Sheldon's Brown website says that: "Chainline is measured from the centerline of the frame to the center of the chain. In the case of triple chainwheel sets, measure to the middle chainring." From this I worked out that with longer spindle chainline should be always bigger.0 -
Your 8spd crankset will work with a 9spd cogset.
If you are going to change the crankset then you must get the correct bb length for whatever cranks you get."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
