CO2 Refill Safety

I've just got myself the Lezyne Alloy Drive CO2 inflator and as I've never used them before I was wondering how safe the refills are to carry in the jersey pocket. I know one cartridge can be carried in the case of the drive itself, but are they safe just on their own? I don't use a saddle bag so tend to put everything in my jersey pockets and thought what might happen in the event of a crash. Hitting the deck is bad enough but could a refill explode on impact with the road?

They might hurt a bit, but I wouldn't worry too much, after all, they're designed to contain pressurised gas. If you're really worried, hurl one at the road and see if it goes bang.

Tell you what, if I remember, I'll do it tomorrow and report back to you :D

As above - you're not going to damage a steel cartridge designed to hold compressed gas at 900psi with a very large safety margin!! Drive over one with a car and i bet you wont mark it

Thanks guys. Strangely enough it's one purchase you hope you never have to use, and I certainly hope a car does not drive over one!

If its still in your back pocket then your body will absorb the impact......... so its ok - the CO2 cartridge will be fine!!

I've had an emergency CO2 thingy for about 5years. I've never needed it yet !! That said, I'm positive I'll need it on Sunday now !!!

Sounds like we need Mythbusters to see if they can explode. I really doubt it though.

They're not safe for air travel - they will get confiscated if you try to fly with them.
