Looking to spend some time exploring france. also thinking about buying a house there but it has to be somewhere there is some decent mountain biking to be had. Houses have to be relatively cheap (compared to UK) so I guess that rules out alps and southern coast. any ideas? thanks.

Hautes Alpes. Between Briancon and Gap, department 05. Great riding, and pretty cheap houses (although not as cheap as Spain :D )

    Good luck!

Check this website: Fédération Française de Cyclisme
They give you all the FFC MTB centers in France.
In most of thoses places, you can find MTB tracks for any level, ranked like ski tracks from green to black.
  • The Bauge National Park around the Mont Revard area is very good for MTBing. The park is sandwiched between Annecy and Aix-les-Bains, although the best trails are up and around Mont revard out of Aix. Aix is set on a lake so it's also a beautiful place to stay and it's cheaper than Annecy.
There is nothing like the incredible feeling of summiting a Tour climb with blue skies all around and the sun on your back.

aude in languedoc roussillon south west france is very good it has the most kilometers of marked trail in france also ski stations with bike lift in the summer. property is cheap enough as are most other things. ryan air fly to carcassonne airport and i never pay more than 60 quid return. i think the area has something for everyone of any ability and fitness level the routes are graded green through to black and the maps are free from tourist offices. cycling is popular in the area so there are plenty of bike shops and most towns and villages have road and mtb cycling clubs so theres always someone around to ask if you need help. hope this helps if you want more specific info or links to sites just ask
