Upgrade or new?

Hey all.
My GT needs a new rear hub, now, this has given me the excuse to get lighter wheels, as my rear casstte doesn't fit most wheels...
But they can fit on Hope hubs as long as the rear is made from steel rather than alloy.
With that, I'm planning to get better brakes, which presents a problem, the ones I want, means I need new shifters.
So as i need to upgrade my shifters, and cassette the option of going 9 speed, or even 10 speed has arisen.
I also want to change my front fork to a lighter, air one, like a Rockshox Reba or Recon... or a Fox unit if I can afford it.
So all in all, this totals to around £800 with fitting etc.
I only have a GT avalanche, which was a budget buy anyways of £500.
Is my frame worth spending £800 on? or can I get a better bike for £800?
I would like a On-One whippet later in life too, so maybe get what I need now, and swap over later?
I need help deciding.
Thanks.

Short answer no, spend it on a new bike you can get some cracking bikes for that budget,

Spose I could sell, and get around £1100-£1200 in total.... is that enough for a decent/sh full suss?White Bikes, make the best bikes.

The GT is a tough frame that will take a long travel fork - wouldn't be my choice for a light XC type bike.
Have a look at the Giant Anthem series for a full suss, some amazing deals on at the moment.0 -
Well my style is blue/red trails, and proper treking across country, planning to do the entire length of the River Wye soon (138 miles) So I would love a light bike, just to make things slightly easier.
Full suss has only come about because I'm talking about serious money, well it is to me. But would say £1100 just get me what I have now? a Budget bike, that to get the very best from, need upgrading?White Bikes, make the best bikes.

£1100 would buy a light hardtail with some very good parts, or, as in the case of the Anthem, a superb frame, decent weight and parts that still do the job.
Anthem X5:

Anthem X4, if you can stretch to it:

On the hardtail front, Scott Scale:

You could upgrade what you have ie new forks (£300), new SLX groupset (£300) and parts, but would still be left with a heavy frame.0 -
I will admit I do like those Anthem's!
I could also buy the bits I want, and a carbon On-One hardtail for the same money! thats the scary thing!
A whippet frame is only £400, or even a 456 frame is £300-400! Combine that with a nice air fork, and wheels... I think I'd be ontoa winner?
Amazing how this is all sparked from a crap cheap hub, that can't be fixed eh?!White Bikes, make the best bikes.

I wonder if On-One do credit agreements lol!
If they do, think I'll just do the GT up as cheap as I can, push it on, and get the Whippet...White Bikes, make the best bikes.
