Has anyone tried using the new(ish) Tiagra 4600 30-12 cassettes with an Ultegra 6700 34/50 groupset? Will this work with the short cage derailleur?

Cheers.

28t max apparently, for both the short (double/compact) or medium cage (triple chainring).

TommyEss - I just checked the tech docs and you are right. Shimano state that the maximum sprocket size for both the short and medium cage is 28t. However, I think that is bu11 sh1t! How can the maximum for both lengths be the same? I think this is Shimano playing safe because the largest cassette sprocket available in the Ultegra range is 28t.

Has anyone tried the 30-12 cassette with Ultegra 6700? Living in the Lakes I am very tempted by this as it would make ascending the likes of Hardknott/Honister etc slightly less painful.

I thought the length accounted for the physical distance between inner and outer ring on doubles or triples - triple cranksets are wider than doubles/compacts, and was less to do with the teeth on the cassette. May be wrong though. There are other mechs you could try, but if you want a massive cassette on the back, SRAM is your friend. To be fair, I've got a compact (50/34) with an 11-28 cassette and the gearing is within a breath of the lowest on my other bike with a triple (50/39/30) with a 12-27 cassette.

Your confusing max capacity with max sprocket size.

    Hi alesupper

Started a similar thread a week or so back in the "Workshop" forum.

    viewtopic.php?f=40004&t=12839157&p=17480531#p17480531

If you read my reply post 2nd to last I quote a recent comment in Cycling Plus where they have tested the 30 tooth with both the short and medium cage derailleurs with no problem. I reckon the Shimano advice is just to cover their a**e in case anyone really messes up the switch

    Hi Arlowood

Thanks for that. I suspected it would work but thought it would be worth asking. I am off to my LBS to buy one tomorrow. They are only £22.40 so it has to be worth a try!

    Cheers

it works fine, I use it on my cross bike. Just set it up so the top jockey pulley doesnt hit the teeth of the largest cog.

To do this, when the bike is at home or on you work stand, put it in the small ring up front and the largest cog at the back. If you see or hear any noise (its usually a low frequency sound), screw in the small screw that's tucked in behind the hanger bolt.

    Voila...

    Thanks FrancsJacques, much appreciated.

I'm off to the bike shop this morning and planning to do a 90 miler in the Lakes tomorrow taking in most of the Fred Whitton route so it is going to get a real good test tomorrow as am I.

** UPDATE ** I bought the Tiagra 4600 30-12 cassette and stuck it on my summer bike running the 6700 Ultegra compact 50/34 with the usual short cage derailleur. It worked perfectly without any adjustment at all. Didn't even need to adjust the B screw as there was plenty of clearance between the derailleur's top cog on the 30t sprocket.

    Sorted :D

    Was that a 10s or 9s cassette?

Ultegra 6700 12-30t is due in June 2012. Should be 100g lighter. I've gone the Tiagra route too with Ui2 and it's absolutely fine again with NO adjustment! Token alloy lock ring gets rid of Shimano's steel version.

What is the gradient and length of the hills you are riding to need a 34 x 30 ???

Well if he's doing the Fred Whitton route, this one would be nice to have a low gear on

    Yes it works

Was told by Cycle Surgery would have to get long cage RD but got a mechanic to fit no problem to 53-39.

If you do google search plenty have people have done using mountain bike cassette

Tiagra 12-30 cassette only 18 quid from Ribble

If you can wait Shimano Ultegra 12-30 coming, ratios in spec doc

  • I have just installed the Ultegra 12-30 10-speed cassette on my Raleigh SP titanium road bike with an Ultegra compact double 34-50 up front. The rear derailleur is a standard Shimano 105 short cage.
I live in the Lake District and wanted a lower gear for the hills. It's a great combo and works brilliantly.
  • I can confirm it works fine. Ive just installed a Tiagra 12-30 10 speed cassette on an Ultegra rear mech s/s, everything on the bike is Ultegra.

Chain didnt need adjusting at all, just fiddled with the B-screw a bit for clearance. Works great on the hills near me.

I got a SRAM 11-32 to work with a short 6700 mech and 50-34 chainset.

Not sure if I used the 32 much, but nice to know it's there on a long climbing ride like the Marmotte.

Wow I'm surprised it will work with a 32 cog. That is worth knowing cheers.

This is all good news for me, I was expecting to have to fit a compact on my TT bike for a really hilly TT next spring which takes in Ankerdine Hill. Now it looks like I can fit the Tiagra cassette and keep my 55/39 on. I won't even have to buy the cassette because I have one on my new tourer so it's just a case of swapping over :D

    I better blush ...
    But I have a 11-36 on my Ui2 50-34
I could have sold it for a fortune on the Etapes, Marmotte and Haute Route

34-32? seriously? you may as well buy a car at that point.
