Only you can choose both are pretty good bikes for the money - really the important question you need to know is how does the bike feel & you need to get to your LBS and try them both to compare how they feel to you and which feels the most sporty/comfortable etc.
Pain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.

I've got the 2012 Defy 1, its superb.

Lives up to the hype in the bikeradar review... the genesis is going to need to be very nice to justify £300 extra.

It depends what you want from the bike and what you're likely to use it for in the future. The Defy leans more towards a race bike and the Equilibrium is more of an audax bike.

If you think you're more likely to want to use it to race on in the future I'd go for the Defy but if you're more likely to want to do some light touring then the Equilibrium would be more suitable - I have an Equilibrium and it is indeed very nice but I wouldn't want to do a race or TT on it.

Also I wouldn't pay full RRP for the Equilibrium 20, you could source the parts and build it up for much less.
