Experience with a Fox Septune shock?

Does anyone have any experience with this? I'm looking at buying a second hand frame with one of these equipped from '05. Google doesn't really shed light on this. Also, even if I sent the shock of to be serviced, after 6/7 years would it still be reliable? Thanks! 8)

Septune's had a little bit of a history for unreliability due to the crazy 7 position pro-pedal, and were replaced by Triads in 2007.That said, if its ok now, it was probably a good one. They can be upgraded serviced etc, even pushed and kashima upgraded, so shouldn't be an issue getting them sorted.

  • Reliability as in fiddly? or breaking reliability? Does the cost of a service differ depending on how narked it is when you send it off? I don't really need custom tuned, just in decent working order! :) Thanks for your insight

Tendancy to leak oil as I recall, and get stuck down too. Service is generally the same whether farked or not, as they basically get rebuilt anyway.

  • Will a TFTuned service fix the leaking and sticking problems? Or are they just inbuilt to the design? And another question (!): Is the PUSH service worth it for the extra 50 quid?

Possibly, although you'd really need to speak with TF about their experiences on that. The push is only worth it when you have owned the shock for a while, and know what you would like to change.

  • Ahh okay, thanks for your help! Didn't realise they would do all that on a service/upgrade.

The sticking down issue was due to a faulty batch of o-rings about 5 years ago. The bike won't be rideable in that state, so I'd be stunned if that was an issue.

They are virtually identical to an RP3, it was just Specialized being 'special' and having a completely useless extra range of adjustment, it's no different to any other 6 year old Float shock.

Combined with a unique i2i / stroke measurement, so it's a hassle swapping for a different shock. Because no one needs 7 pro-pedal settings.
  • Thanks, as long as it's a decent shock (with or without 7 settings!) I have no problem getting it serviced (bar price of course!) to bring it up to date. Thanks for your replies.
