So sometimes on my way too/from work all of a sudden I'll here this ticking from what I assume is coming from my crank. And then it will just stop then evey know and again i'll hear it again, its most common on the uphills than anything else. Has anyone got any experience with this and does anyone know what it is.

P.S. Its a brand knew TREK 4500 so there should not be any problem with my crank. WELL I HOPE NOT! :D

I had something like this a few months ago. It was my knee.

I've had that sort of noise a couple of times in the past from the interface between the bottom bracket and the crank. Even when it's done up quite tight it can sometime click especially under load. I cured it last time by removing both cranks and putting a little grease on the square tapers and bolts before fitting the cranks back on again.

Try checking your front mech cable isn't catching your crank as it rotates, they can stick out at an angle.

In my experience noises from cleats, pedals, rear hub and even seatpost have "sounded like" they were coming from the crank/BB area.

An intermittent creak can sound like a ticking noise. Removing and re-greasing pedals and seatpost are the first things I'd be trying.

Could be saddle, seatpost, pedals to crank interface, crank to bottom bracket interface or handlebar/bar ends.

    Best way to locate?

Find a quiet road, ride seated, ride standing up, freewheel seated, freewheel standing up. This will tell you when it happens so you can get to the source quicker.

Whatever it is, remove, clean, re-grease and re-install.

I've had the trim on my shoes catch my cranks before now. My current irritating squeak is down to my MTB shoes; the soles rub on the pedal axle as the pedal turns. Can't do anything about it (I'm not going to grease the soles of my shoes, before anyone suggests it!)

  • are the pedals on the bike standard cheapo wellgos? they usually start clicking after a couple of weeks they are awful, if not make sure they are tight and have anti seize on them and don't wobble/ try another pair

pedals click, cranks tend to give more feedback, are they ruff or have any play in them?

one more thing to check is the chain ring bolts they can click/ creak if they are loose
    worst moment ever...
buzzing down twisting single track then.... psssst BANG!!!
