Random 10 spd / 9 spd fail.

After trying to get the gears to work on my new drivetrain, a mix of XT and XTR in 10 spd I was ready to give up. I just couldn't get the rear to set up, it seemed incapable to getting through all the gears smoothly. More tension and I lose highest, slacken the cable I only lose the ability to reach the low range. No shift went well either. Limit screws? Backed off. Any thing else? Looks fine. So what was it? My 10speed set has a 9speed RH shifter. Doh! How annoying.
The odd thing is that it still has the 10 spd labels attached. Go figure. Anyway, that will be going back on Monday, and no, I can't be bothered to reattach the window.

You're not counting 9 clicks and thinking it's 9 speed are you? The shifters are very different, can't see they'd mix them up.
Is everything else 10 speed?0 -
No - bit too obvious that one. Its 8 clicks. Visually arent the M770s identical? I can see that they could mix them up.A Flock of Birds

Ah, before you edited it said XTR/XTR, which I assume to mean a mix of 9 and 10 speed XTR, and the M980 shifters are very different to the M970s.
