Daft question, but when inflating my tyres, the needle on the gauge shoots up as i inflate then drops down as i stop or pull back up. Is the tyre pressure where the needle comes to rest or the peak of where it shoots up to?

I scared of putting 140+ psi in my tyres!!! :?

It's the peak, the max pressure it takes to squeeze more air in to an already pressurised tube. I wouldn't take the gauge as accurate on some of those cheapy pumps though. They look a bit vague to me.

I pump the air in fairly slowly and evenly, and I find that the needle doesnt "peak" or jump as you describe.

I use the yellow Joe Blow track pump which seems to be pretty accurate.
