Just got my first mountain bike Boardman HT Pro and was wondering are then any good rides in/near Yeovil where I can get the feel for off roading before going Quantocks and the like.

Ham Hill is just north of Yeovil and is pretty decent for exploring. I'm just up the road in Sherborne, and there's quite a decent network of rights of way round here, although I'm getting a bit bored now having been here for two years! Quantocks are great, but plenty of stuff closer to home. If you fancy a meet up drop me a PM.

Rock and Road in Yeovil 'host' rides every Thursday night. I'm going along to my first one on Thursday and apparently everyone just meets at the shop for a 6pm start. I've no idea what routes they ride, but I'll let you know what it's like once I've been.

Other than that I'll second that Ham Hill is pretty good fun to explore. If either of you fancy a ride then PM me.

Went out with the Rock and Road guys last night and can highly recommend it! Ended up doing around 30km of single track, woods and bridleways in the dark. They go at a good pace, but thankfully there were lots of little stops to regroup and recover! They're a good bunch of guys (well the 5 last night were!) and will make you feel really welcome. 6pm meet for a 6:15pm start every Thursday. Maybe see you there.

Ben what time did you get back? Did you need good off road lights or where standard bike lights fine?

We got back to the shop just after 8:30pm, but I get the impression some weeks it's longer and some weeks it's shorter. The other guys all had decent off-road lights, plus helmet mounted lights, but I just had a Lezyne Powerdrive on my bars, which was just about good enough. I think a helmet mounted light would definitely improve things though. The lighter evenings are coming now though, so think I'll put up with it for a few weeks and invest in something better when the winter comes.

Tried Ham hill today. Was fun but struggled to find any rhythm. Is that normal? Couldn't see any dedicated trails so kinda guessed my way around. And the climb up to Ham hill itself was fun not. By the way Thursdays are hard for me as wife works nights so she is normally sleeping so I have the kids.
