I have had a Carrera Vulcan since January.
Ive decided, after planning to upgrade the forks and brakes, Im going to just buy a Fury instead. I have just been to Halfords and every aspect of the bike just seems better.
Does anyone know when there is another Halfords web sale? If not, I will order it online tonight and collect it tomorrow.
If anyone is after a spanking Carrera Vulcan, with about 10 months warranty remaining and 60 odd miles under its wheels and a few upgrades, keep your eyes on the classifieds or eBay!
Damn this biking bug grips hard!

They seem to be getting rarer on the Fury - and the sales seem totally random.

I'd actually upgrade what you have. The Fury does have a better fork in the shape of the Raidon, but for 200 quid or so you could put a belter of a fork on the Vulcan and significantly improve it. Along with new tyres. Sure the Fury has 10 speed kit, but the fork makes more difference.
  • sonic you are a really helpful bloke you know! haha.

Ive already got panaracer fire xc pro's and lock on grips fitted and did intend to upgrade other bits as you say.

But I went and looked at the Fury tonight, and there is a massive quality difference. The stem has a cutout and the handlebar has centre markings so you know its bang on centre. It comes with lock ons. Its got an external bottom bracket, better gearing, it just 'feels' like a better bike. I should have just bought one in the first place.

The Fury has a Raidon X2 fork, I can only find normal Raidons for sale and the cheapest is £180 delivered.

Hi mate, was in Halfords tonight and the Boardman Team was selling for £749, if you wanted a FS like. the Pro is now £1k.
so would assume that the Fury is on sale. :D

I see what you are saying, it is a good bike: but I think the Vulcan with Rebas would be better ;-). External BBs don't really last any longer, and pretty looking parts may actually be heavier!

Raidons I have seen for as little as £120 online. I think if you were to sell the Vulcan (£250) and get the Fury (lets say £500 in the sale), you are still going to be £250 down.

Is a close call. Slap one of these on (you can reduce travel internally ) and you have one of the best forks there is.
  • Just had a quick scout on merlins for Reba's, theyre quite expensive.

Another nice difference was the gear shifter blades, on the Vulcan (X4's) they are just plastic levers, on the Fury (X5's) they are metal and more shaped for your thumb if that makes sense! The ergonomics of the Elixir 1 levers compared to the Clarks is much more natural aswell.
I knew the Fury was a better bike, but after having a proper look and feel, Im amazed how good it is for the price.

I got the Vulcan in a Halfords sale for a good price, and as its like new I will hopefully get a good return on it. If I dont get a Fury, I can see me chucking alot of money at the Vulcan to get it to the same level as the Fury if you know what I mean?

Another quick question. The Fury has 15mm QR axle. How does that work? Do you unscrew it then withdraw the axle, as opposed to 9mm where it just drops out?

It is the Suntour QLoc: you can download the details from suntour. But you are essentially correct.

I meant to add this link to the previous post.

I think your money will be much better spent upgrading the Vulcan. I've got a 2009 Vulcan which was let down by the forks and brakes so got a second hand Reba for £100 and discounted Elixir R's for £130 which made a huuuuge difference. Plenty of other parts have been replaced due to wear and tear and personal preference but the X4 gears are still working fine and the terribly unfashionable square taper bottom bracket does the job it was intended for.
