Just serviced my BB myself and glad i did, was pretty dirty inside but BB thankfully was fine so didnt need to buy a new one :D

Question is:

Do i need to undo/remove the pinch screws if i want to tighten the crank arms to remove some play in the cranks??

Or can i just tighten them up using BB tool without removing the pinch screws.

if you dont undo the pinch bolts nothing will happen.

Very much....in fact you shouldn't have got it apart without loosening the pinch bolts......

    This. Very this.
  • tried tightening the black crank bolt to stop play in the cranks and it seems my BB on its last legs as there seems to still be play in the cranks even after taking the slack out of the black bolt.

If you have tightened your crank and still have play it is the BB (shimano slx or similar crank) you can take it apart and pack the bearings with grease but it won't last long.
