Just on the off chance: looking for films / a source with Russian subtitles but in the original (English language) version. Can get Russian or English language films, but no films (apart from Russian) with subtitles. Tried putting "russian subtitles" into Amazon to no avail....

you could try artificial eye, pathe or the BFI. Artificial eye specialise in foreign (world cinema) distribution.

Thanks a lot, chaps. I have a couple of visitors next week from the biggest country in the world who don't speak much English. One of them is a 10 year old girl so I don't really want to show her my collection of films for which subtitles are unnecessary. I'll check these sites out.

Cleat, Artificial Eye is a great (what?) label, distributor? I still have a decent VHS collection of their stuff (eg Dekalog, Tricoleur/ 3 Colours, Pickpocket, Solaris etc). Do you know Rapid Eye? (Books. Nothing to do with films. Amazon Rapid Eye. It may be right up your street).

After looking at the list I stand corrected: I have a couple of their films

excellent - i'll check rapid eye out. I'm still on the hunt for the taviani brothers Kaos, haha, its a bugger to find. Re solaris I've got all Tarkovskys stuff and I dont think I've ever spent less than 20 quid for a dvd - why is world cinema so pricey, grrrrr.

At the risk of this turning into a private conversation.... I assume it has something to do with the "set/fixed price" Dunno what it's called in English. Been away for too long. Anyway, here in Germany, it's almost impossible to buy films with subtitles for a reasonable price: almost all films are dubbed. Of course, if it's an English language film, the original version is always available. At a price. I get my stuff from amazon.co.uk: a CD here costs about 12 quid. Amazon. 6- DVD here 16€, amazon.uk 5! But I grew up with Channel 4 and BBC 2 when they were (probably) the best film-fan channels anywhere. Remember the Alex (?) Cox presents season on Channel 4? Kenneth Anger, Jarman and the like. I have British tv again thanks to an iPhone app and love it. But where are the film channels? I first saw Mean Streets on C4. That'll never happen again.

All looks teribly dated these days. I had to order one of these books to a friend's house because my parents didn't want me to read this kind of thing. Seems very tame these days. But Henry Rollins wrote an article before we knew what he looked like.
