Shimano SPD-SL cleats and pedals ....longevity query...

Hi again :-)

Well, did my first ride with my new Sectuer, I've got the budget SPD-SL pedals (£15 new !) and I am somewhat concerned about the longevity of them. A 90 minute ride and the cleat and shoe mating surfaces have little "nicks" and signs of wear. Also, even on the lightest release setting It was a struggle disengaging :(

My Mtbs have Atac's and those last forever, my last road bike (a Bottechia SL with Veloce etc) had Look shoes with red "floating" cleats that were very hard wearing - even without walking "protection".

Am I worrying over nothing? Thanks again, Mark :)

If your pedals are the ones with the plastic pad then this will wear in time. They are replaceable quite cheaply. The cleats last well. I have only changed mine because I have worn the yellow pads off with too much walking.I have been using them since they came out and have changed 2 sets (probably 20000 miles plus). As for disengaging, try a thin smear of grease on the mating areas. Works wonders.

Thanks John, good to hear that my worries are over nowt :) (beginning to think my worrying must be due to my advancing age or maybe my latent OCD...... ;-p )

I'll give the surfaces a little dab of grease before my next ride too :D

    All the best, Mark.

my yellow cleats looked mullered after a few rides but have stayed like that for about a year. I bought new cleats to replace them back then thinking they were just like that and about to go but I still havent swapped them.

At £15 a shot, why not buy 2 pairs and not worry about longevity?

Seriously, what SPD-SLs can you get for £15 new?

the cleats are around £12 a pair iirc. thats some seriously cheap pedals at 15 if they included cleats.
