Really best bike for a grand? If set up by LBS?

At what point will a hardtail hold you back on trails like Quantocks or Afan?

    it's a good bike for the money you would be lucky to find something with a similar spec for money. as for the set up from the halfords store depends on the store and the "capable" staff there. To ride Afan and Quantocks it will do fine, i think you will only be held back my your own ability. climbing will be fine. descending on the more gnarly of trails you will find it some what more sketchy sorry...."fun" :P

    Afan and the Quantocks will be fine - just take it easy. Me and a few friends have ridden hardtails over there a few times - it's definitely doable, and you will be at an advantage on the climbs.
    Just not as easy as a full-sus on the descents - you have to take a little more care picking your lines.
