I bought a Stumpjumper expert evo less than a year ago and have had to replace the BB bearings twice already.
The bottom bracket still creaks even with new bearings. The bearings are housed in a nylon cup arrangement and just push into the frame. Has anyone else had such problems and if so what can i do about it the noise is driving me crazy.

Regards

Andy

Is it BB30 or is it press fit?

If press fit shimano or SRAM?

With the nylon cup it sounds like it is not BB30.

What year bike? And HT or FSR?

Not sure this will help you but I have the same bike and am having a bit of a nightmare replacing the original bottom bracket.

I got a new one from chain reaction that to the eye looks exactly like the original but it pushes in easier and when measured there is a tiny difference in size (thousands of a inch). Specialized have said I need to buy one that says 'Made for Specialized' on the box. Not sure if they are just fobbing me off but I cannot find such a product, and their distributos don't mention such a thing.

I guess if I used this new bottom bracket it would cause creaking due to this slight difference in size. Local bike shop is looking into it for me.
  • i bought a sram 10A BB pressfit 30 (part number 00.6451.041.000) set, i have been out on the bike twice with creaking all the way. I have just removed the crank again to find the one side is showing a non smooth bearing. i would be interested in knowing what your bike shop has to say on the matter.
Since owning the bike (may 2011) i have had the seat post loosing air, crank problems, bearing problems in the front wheel, a shifter packing up and a cable wearing through it's housing all this on a £3000 bike.

This is the part I bought

It is very slightly smaller then the original bottom bracket. My bike shop spoke to the distributors and got another one sent but it is exactly the same part again (too small!). ~They are contacting specialized again today and I will let you know how it goes.

I am worried because the bb has only lasted 9 months and don't want to go through this everytime it needs replacing. I am almost beginning to think the fault lies with the frames!!
  • put grease where the axle rests on the bb races should shut it up
    worst moment ever...
buzzing down twisting single track then.... psssst BANG!!!
  • Thanks Cammer,
yes that looks the same as the one i bought.I think your right about the frame.
I have totally packed it with grease and no luck. what do you think about the conversion kits they do ?
i know it means buying a new crank set but i'm at my wits end with this problem.
Specialized should sort the problem for us, it's not like the bikes are cheap.

Glad to know i'm not the only one suffering :?

If the conversion kits are the same fit in the frame then, that won't improve anything. Also at my wits end!

FSA do a complete pressfit 30 bb. I might give one of these a go, but at the moment my local bike shop is raising a warranty claim on Monday on the frame, with Specialized to get some action.

Lads at the shop agree totally with the problem and have been very helpful so far, and down to Specialized now. Watch this space!
  • Does yours creek in when your in both rings on the front or just the top one?

Is the creek coming from the interface between the crank spindle and bearings or the bearing housings and the frame?

Just to update you on my problem Andy, after a lot of faffing I was told by Specialized to just use a new (smaller, as above) BB and see how it goes.

Been on 2 rides and so far it has been fine, no crunching or creaking. The lbs made a video they sent to Specialized to show how the new BB 's just push in with ease. They said to just run with it like that. It doesn't seem a correct fit to me but I'll just have to see how it goes.

Have you been in touch with the shop you bought the bike from?
