I didn't know where to ask this question...So aplogies of it is in the wrong section.

when I started riding a road bike (the first time round) in the early '80's...I recall that I used tyre protectors, especially with tubs.

These were basicaly a wire triangle that bolted on to the back of the brake caliper.....The wire triangle, effectively rested or rubbed on the surface of the tyre...There wasn't much pressure and the idea was to deflect stones sticking to the tyre surface, so that you didn't push them further into your tyre on the next revolution, hopefully reducing the chance of a puncture.

I always thought these worked quite well....was that not the case?

In an industry that is keen to sell us accesories for our bikes, i can't recall seeing these for sale any where.

Does anyone remember these or have anay insight?

Cheers.

I remember them. Brilliant idea but not seen them since the 70s. I just stick my hand on the tyre periodically. Not as effective but has the added advantage of removing any gel/ nasal debris from the fingers.

They were tyre scrapers, not protectors ?

Yes, I do that with a (gloved !!) hand if I've just ridden over where they've been cutting the hedges or something and I want to brush off anything stuck to the tyre before it gets bedded-in.

As an alternative, fit Crud RoadRacer mudguards - they fit so tight on my bike that if I pick-up the slightest bit of mud on the tyre they soon scrape it off !!
