hey guys,
probably a long shot but i thought it was worth a go
my fire died last week and the engineer came and said the fire is in perfect nik apart from a broken thermocouple- safety device to open gas valve when the flame is on which he could not source.
however I have found a place that has them in stock in my model number and part code so but..
1) will British Gas fit a part not sourced by themselves?
2) if not is it a straight swap?- I can take all the bits off etc as I asked the engineer how to do it when he was here but don't know how to 'unclip' the coupling
3) what would you do as I really don't want to shell out 300-400 quid on a fire when summer is looming
oh if it helps the model is a valor black beauty 466
cheers

I would talk to British Gas first and tell them where you have found the part - it sounds odd that they couldn't find it.
Failing that, you should still use a Corgi registered engineer to fit the part, not give it a go yourself. This isn't like rewiring a plug or putting up shelves - this could be very dangerous if not done properly.
I'm sure you'll be able to find someone Corgi registered to fit the part for you, and I'm sure it'll be a lot less than the cost of a new fire.Cannondale Synapse 105, Giant Defy 3, Giant Omnium, Giant Trance X2, EMC R1.0, Ridgeback Platinum, On One Il Pompino...0 -
Just unplugging and plugging in a new TC is as low risk as it gets, if you do it wrong the fire will not work anyway, in fact I doubt you need to be 'gas safe' registered to do it as you're not touching anything 'gas'.
