... what causes this particular noise again?

(regular click on downstroke of left pedal every time but only when standing & really putting the power down)

Whilst waiting for a serious response...

    Left side you say, earring?
    Keys in pocket?
    One spd shoe, one slipper?
    Collar bone?
Spoke tension RH side back wheel?
    Too many pies?
    Really loud wireless sensor?
    Ginger cat stuck in spokes?
    i-pod malfunction?
    Bracelet/watch/bling?

    :D

First thing to try is remove both pedals greese threads and refit, next is same with crank arms...if all else fails check BB for play, good luck.

The above assumes nothing is catching of course! :D

Sounds silly but check that the end of the front derailleur cable isnt hitting the right crank. Sounds more BB / crank though!! :(

I had a similar noise - turned out to be the speed sensor on the front fork. A small amount of flex in the fork meant that the sensor was hitting the magnet on the wheel. I had basically knocked the sensor whilst cleaning.

haha, well after the noisy disaster I had when I first got my bike (which was proven to be a faulty freehub and therefore not my fault!!), it's been running silently for months now.

This sounds like a definite click and it's not something catching.

Will check cleats, pedal axle and cranks now (although I recently stripped and cleaned the crank / BB assembly and am pretty sure I put it back properly and it didnt improve the noise).

    Cheers!

end of winter so probably time to give it a really good clean to get all the salt out an regrease everything to make it all lovely and special again...

Same goes for shoes and accessories and the like...

    BUGGER!!!!

Didn't realise that the left pedal UNscrews CLOCKWISE.

Will need to go to the bike shop when it opens at 1100hrs tomorrow to buy a new one before I can ride tomorrow

Anyway, have completely stripped, cleaned & re-greased the whole BB / crank area. The BB on the right sounds a teenytiny bit rough so maybe time to replace it (it's a Hollowtech one).

New pedals on, and with the stripping/cleaning/lubing of the BB/crank assembly, the noise has gone away entirely.
