How do you determine if its a rear hanger or rear mech that's bent?
a log bounced up and bent the XT shadow slightly out on a 2009 stumpy fsr, gears all work ok, but how do I work out whether its the mech or the hanger without replacing one or the other necessarily?
Any ideas?
i am fond of the "if it ain't broke don't fix it, however is it likely to be weaker (especially if hanger) and more likely to break on a long ride???

look at it.
or if you have the tool use that to see and straighten the hanger.
when you have determined if the hanger was bent and sorted it if needed then look at the mech."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

If it shifts fine, I'd just leave it. Unlikely to be bent much if it hasn't affected the indexing, and presuming you haven't bent it straight again, doubt it's weakened.I don't do smileys.
