how easy/hard is it to put a fork bung into a carbon fork. And is there a certain depth it has to go in and is just a matter of a rubber mallet and a few taps.

Depends on the type - but a self-tightening one will go down with no resistance if opened up enough - then you tighten it up in place. Be aware that carbon steerer thinkness varies - so some bungs will fit in some but be too wide for others.

Personally, I use a bung long enough so that it sits where the stem is going to be clamped - in case it helps reduce the chance of damage when the stem is tightened. However, most bungs don't seem to be long enough to achieve this so I don't know if I've being over-cautious.

I got one of these: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/deda-expander-bung/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=base&utm_campaign=uk&utm_content=Deda-Deda_Expander_Bung-Black If you look at the reviews, you'll see that some folk find it too big to fit their steerers - but for mine, it was perfect. So best check what specs you can find and reviews.

Sorry - re-read your post and I think you are asking about how difficult the process is - rather than having an issue getting it to fit.

It's simple. have the steerer cut to the length you want - or get a long bung like the one above if you want to leave a lot of steerer sticking out the top until you're sure of the final stem position.

Put an allen key through the centre of the bung and turn to expand the bang enough so it fits enough to slide in - but not be too loose. Slide it in and most have a wide collar at the top that stops it going any further in.

Turn the allen key and it will tighten. Don't over do it - you just need enough friction to hold the bung in place when pre-laoding the top cap.

Put on stem and spacers as required, then hold it all down by screwing on the top cap (the screw thread fits inside a threaded hole within the hex socket of the bung).

To be honest, it's much easier than a star nut on an alu steerer - and if I get another alu steerer fork in the future, I've going to use a bung within it rather than star nut so save any hasstle.

Don't do it too often though I hear it's bad for the eyesight.
