This was a discussion in our club forum - one of our members (kurt) said:

"........but if you have a Garmin unit and you upload your routes to Garmin Connect, make sure that you don't start or end rides at your house if your activity is not private and is therefore visible to anyone!

Make sure the little padlock icon shows as locked."

Seems like sound advice.... thought I would pass it on......

Safe riding :)

Yes, I figured that. In my estate I can see the rides and daily patterns and who has what garmin - at least it doesnt tell you what bike someone has, although if they do high mileage then it is a fair bet they have a reasonable bike. Best to keep activities private and if you publish one, do it as a course and as you say, dont use your home as start or end...

Strava has a begin/end masking facility. You can enter a postcode (home say) and it won't show any tracking within 500ft or a mile of that postcode coordinate.

I leave my Endomondo open, personally. All it says is that I own a bike and ride a bit. I bet all the houses around here have bikes in them. If you are posting routes on forums starting from home with a footer that says what bike you have, and it is something very new and valuable, and your house is often left empty or has poor security, it might be an issue. Depends where you live, I suppose, I forget to lock my car half the time and once left the keys on the roof all night!
  • Well.. what should i say, same with Endomondo
  • good advice, there was something about this on the TV recently about how people would get their bikes nicked after thiefs saw where they were cycling to and from.

I allways turn my garmin off and on from my local police station:)
